What a hero and what a story of determination! Hikmet Kaya, a retired forest technician from Turkey, is being praised as the main driving force behind an impressive ecological achievement – turning a barren hill in Sinop city into a green oasis of million trees.

He began his career in the Boyabat district of the Sinop province in 1978 under the Forest Management Department where he spent most of his time for 25 years working on afforestation in the steppe lands of the district.

"The transformation of those lands into forests has been my biggest source of pride," he noted, stressing fruitful cooperation with villagers.

They planted 30 million saplings over the course of his tenure. Today, these trees have continued to grow and this once barren land has is not a lush green forest.
